In the early days of our government, our founding fathers laid the foundation of the free sharing of information in the United States Constitution. This allows education, access to information, and tolerance for dissent as cornerstones of a free and democratic society.
In accordance with upholding the First Amendment to the Constitution, in 1996 the American Library Association (ALA) approved the document Access to Electronic Information, Services, and Networks: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights. This states that it is the library's ethical responsibility to the Constitution to provide access to information in all formats to all people. This includes Internet access.

Children and the Internet |

1. All patrons of the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library, regardless of age, have equal access to the materials, information and technology provided by the library.
2. It is the responsibility of parents and/or legal guardians to determine what their minor children, and only their children, may use or borrow.
3. Minors are defined in this policy as children and young people under the age of 16 years.
4. The library staff is not in a position to enforce parental restrictions within the library. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their children's use of the Internet. |

The Dorothy Alling Memorial Library does not monitor, and has no control over, information accessed through the internet and cannot be responsible for its content. As with all other library materials, children's access to the internet is the sole responsibility of the children's parent or guardian. Four computers are available for in the reference room; four computers are available in the Children's area. Wireless (Wi-fi) is available within the library and the library's outdoor courtyard.

1. The library cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss of data incurred while using library technology.
2. Patrons may utilize only those programs and services installed on each computer.
3. Because of the possibility of introducing viruses to the library system, patrons' remote storage devices (RSD) will be scanned by the library's computers. If a virus is found the RSD may not be used.
4. Users may also use CDs sold by the library.
5. Any application must be properly exited upon completion.
6. Patrons may not illegally copy any data.
7. Patrons may not work from the DOS prompt.
8. Users may not alter any settings, delete or modify any files. |

1. Patrons must leave the computers and software as they found them.
2. Computers and printers will be turned on and off by library staff only.
3. Comput or printer problems must be reported to library staff immediately.
4. Patrons may reserve time on the computers for the current day only.
5. Users are allowed one half hour use per day; and additional time if no one else is waiting.
6. Use of the Interent for activities that violate local, state, or federal laws in prohibited.
