Friends of the Library
"Friends of the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library" is a group of volunteers who share their enthusiasm for books and reading and focus public attention on the library. They stimulate and support library services and facilities for the community, reward meritorious service to the library and support the First Amendment and the Freedom to Read Act as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights. Their principal fundraising activity is the Annual 4th of July book sale and volunteers are always needed. FODAL's by-laws are located here.
On October 2006, the Friends of the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library had their first meeting after a hiatus of about seven years. There was a great turn out for our first meetings and we developed a core group of Friends who organized a terrific debut year of quarterly activities, fund raising (through the annual book sale) and other support for the Library.
One of the most important things decided at the very first meeting was the definition of Friends' membership. By an overwhelming majority, it was decided that what the Library needed most was "Friends in deed." As a result, anyone can become a Friend of the Library by attending any of the monthly meetings or by volunteering at a Friends sponsored event. All donations to the Friends are greatly appreciated (and tax deductible!) but, our Friends group does not make a financial donation a pre-requisite of membership.

Book Sale Helps More Than One Good Cause
Each year the Friends of the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library (Williston) put on a huge book sale during the 4th of July festivities. Book sales have been a traditional method of funding new library materials and services while making room on the shelves of libraries and homes. What is unusual in Williston is that more than just the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library benefits from its book sales. The Friends of DAML have also provided books and cash to literacy foundations and organizations across the world.
